CPU's and CPU's Sockets - CompTia A + Plus Cetification

A CPU socket or CPU slot is a mechanical component(s) that provides mechanical and electrical connections between a microprocessor and a printed circuit board (PCB). This allows the CPU to be placed and replaced without soldering. There are 4 different types of CPU socket!

DIP - Dual in-line package (Old Old One)

They do not make them anymore. They were easy to break and hafd to insert it into the CPU socket

SECC - Single Edge Contact Cartrige - Old

People did not like it because it took a lot of room on the motherboard, so they decided to come out with the Intel Pentium III

PAG - Pin Grid Array - New

. It is smaller than SECC. To Install a Pin Grid Array CPU the motherboard needs to have a zero insertion Forze (ZIF) Socket Like the One on the picture below.

LGA - The land grid array - Newest

Instead of the CPU having the PINs the motherboard has them. It is found on moderm models processor. The land grid array (LGA) is a type of surface-mount packaging for integrated circuits (ICs) that is notable for having the pins on the socket rather than the integrated circuit. An LGA can be electrically connected to a printed circuit board (PCB) either by the use of a socket or by soldering directly to the board.
